Rather than a traditional newsletter that exists as static text in your inbox, PI emails will now be comprised of interactable recs that look exactly like the ones on the site, so you can quickly comment, bookmark for later, smash the like button, or repost on your profile.

Hopping directly on IG to post a create-mode story about a movie I just saw has never really felt intuitive, so this has been a fun way to share my recs with friends and show some extra love to other people’s recs that looked cool or made me laugh.

How we got here

Our mission since day one has been to help you escape the algorithm by sharing a taste of taste from real people.

If we rewind waaaaay back to Fall 2020, you’ll see people like Emily Sundberg sharing her recs on PI in the exact same format we use today. PI’s audience has grown a lot in the following years, and while the guests have gotten bigger, we still use our platform to put on anyone who is doing cool things and deserves more attention.

Launching our social site in January was an experiment to see how far we can push our vision for an Internet that’s more human and free from the algorithm bubbles. There have now been over 150,000 recommendations shared by our users, and thousands of people have met new friends (and even lovers!) based on their love for the same Drag City records and shared interest in esoteric literature. Positive spaces like this are increasingly rare on the Internet.

Perfectly Imperfect has always been more than just a newsletter. It’s a state of mind and a shared yearning for discovery, culture, and human curation. So, our new site feels like a natural progression in building an online community that makes you feel excited and inspired — rather than anxious and overwhelmed.

Why we’re leaving Substack (extended, for the newsletter nerds)

This section is mostly for fellow Substack writers and very curious readers.

I probably wouldn’t have ever started a newsletter if it wasn’t for Substack making it so easy back in 2020. This was a great place for us to grow Perfectly Imperfect and learn the ropes, we just have very specific ambitions for what media and community can be that are impossible to accomplish here.

Building something special that’s ours is the primary motivation for moving off platform, but at the same time, I’ve also grown increasingly wary of putting all my eggs in the Substack basket.

In the last year or so, there’s been a huge push for newsletter writers to make use of Substack’s app specific features such as Chat, Notes, and Live Video, which are great for generating followers, but not necessarily subscribers. The problem is, you don’t own your followers, and you can’t export them along with your subscribers if you ever decide to move elsewhere.

Nearly 6% of Perfectly Imperfect’s audience here is comprised of followers, which I’ll lose by leaving today, and I’ve heard that number can be in the 25 - 50% range for some publications that started post-Notes. There used to be only one option on Substack (hitting “subscribe” and trying out someone’s newsletter) but now there’s an equally weighted in-app “follow” button that sits beside it.

Substack says that followers are supposed to be a lower commitment option for new people that you can someday * big maybe * turn into a subscriber… that is, if you chose to play along and become a power user of their app-specific features.

As a user of Notes, I enjoy the community and content, but as a writer I see it as a big step towards getting writers more dependent on Substack’s app, which will make it much harder to leave someday.

I never thought I’d leave either, yet here I am…

🌹 Phantom of the opera

I will never forget my 5th grade teacher who would play the Phantom of the opera soundtrack everyday while we did busy work in class. For some reason this soundtrack has become my comfort album (original cast but there is a time and a place for the movie soundtrack). Many times while working I am singing this at the top of my lungs (sorry to my neighbor). I have seen the play and movie numerous times and mourn the fact that it is no longer playing on broadway. I am Phantom every year for Halloween and have a collection of miscellaneous Phantom of the opera merch including a throw blanket, a collectors piece indeed. I invite you over and you see my Phantom of the opera throw blanket on my bed, what are you doing in that situation…?

👟 Merrells

My favorite and most worn shoes of all time are my merrell Moab 3s (gore-tex specifically). I've owned almost every colorway over the last 7 years and they are truly the only shoes I can wear that do not cause me any pain. Walking is my life and I am a firm believer in shoes with proper support. I have put thousands of miles on these shoes and wear them with outfits they probably do not match with, they look fine in my eyes, I love them.

🥪 Sandwiches

You can never go wrong with a sandwich, it just might be the perfect food. I love playing around with seasonal produce, cheeses, meats, and bread to create a fun and unique sandwich. You may be wondering about my favorite which is a timeless classic, tuna salad. I will not stand for any tuna salad slander. I make mine with crisp lettuce and sprouts, milk bread, and cape cod potato chips INSIDE the sandwich. Nothing compares to the feeling of eating a sandwich on the beach after swimming in the ocean. 

⭐ Mustard

I am passionate about collecting mustard. A hobby of mine is searching for unique mustards when out and about or traveling. I have a vast selection of grainy, classic dijon, and more adventurous varieties like black currant or gingerbread to name a few. My favorite mustard brand is Edmond Fallot. If you went into my pantry it slightly resembles a speciality grocery store and my fridge has around 3-4 jars open at all times.

There's a new artist I really like named Harry Daniels. The songs are really interesting because they make me feel seen in a way that feels incredibly personal... it's almost as if he read my mind when he was writing them. I think he's a special new artist with a bright future and I can't wait to see how things play out for him. Huge fan of his work!

🧘 Foam rollers 

My physical therapist put me onto these and they literally changed my life... you just put it horizontally (or vertically) on the floor and roll around on it and it stretches your back out so good. I love the noise of hearing my joints crack, I find it weirdly comforting…

🎨 Temporary tattoos 

I've been a little bit hyper fixated on these for quite some time now. I think I really struggle with the idea of committing to getting certain tattoos because I just don't know how I'll feel about it as time goes on especially as my tastes develop and change. I really like the idea of being able to apply and reapply a design to your body and keep it ever changing just as people are.

🧩 Apple news crossword puzzles 

So you've heard of the New York Times Crossword... get ready for the Apple News one! I'm really big on word games, especially crossword puzzles, and so I really like that Apple offers a free crossword. Highkey super underrated. I feel like a lot of people don't know about it and it's also free which is really nice. 

🌟 Doja cat live @ wireless fest 2024

I saw Doja twice during the Scarlet shows, once during the tour and again during Coachella, and I was blown away both times - I think she's the best performer of her generation of new acts by a long shot. Anyway, I was really bummed because I kept seeing clips of her performances during the European run of shows across my social media feed and it seemed like she was blowing the American shows out of the water with the revamp for Europe. Cut to Wireless Fest which was the last date of the tour and she comes out in a custom Dilara Fındıkoğlu ensemble and smashes it out of the park in a way I've never seen before... the rawness, the theatrics, all of it... a true superstar.

📖 ADHD 2.0 by Edward M Hallowell and John J. Ratey

I don’t like to read and I accept that. But if you have ADHD or think you could have it, I prescribe this to you!!! My therapist put me on to this book a few years ago during lockdown. My procrastination & inability to motivate myself to finish the simplest tasks had become debilitating. I felt petrified in life, depressed, stuck in a sludge, and all that jazz. (lockdown probably had a wittle bit to do with it). Knowing that I am unable to finish every book, my therapist recommended the audiobook version of “AHDH 2.0”. The authors are both doctors who also have ADHD and they really understand their demo. It’s an extremely quick, easy listen, and left me feeling scarily encouraged and hopeful. Put it on in the background while you’re drafting an apology email for missing a deadline and simultaneously masturbating at your standing desk that was supposed to change everything!

🎥 Millennium Actress

A lot of people know Satoshi Kon from his anime films “Perfect Blue”, “Paprika” and perhaps his TV Series “Paranoia Agent” that got an american run on Adult Swim ( It’s one of my favorite TV shows of all time & I also recommend it, but I don’t know if it’s legal to recommend something like this within the Perfectly Imperfect Newsletter). I am a huge fan of his work, a lot of which is pretty dark, scary, challenging and so on. But if I had to pick my favorite of his, it would have to be his second movie “Millennium Actress” which feels like his sweetest and most heartfelt work. It’s a super surreal, dreamy, gorgeous movie. Especially insane how small the budget was for an anime feature, and his last movie to use actual cel animation before going digital. It also has my favorite original soundtrack from any movie, composed by Susumu Hirasawa, who went on to do the music for Paprika and Paranoia Agent. Susumu Hirasawa is famously known for doing the theme & other music for the anime BERSERK, but is an electronic music pioneer in his own right. The soundtrack he made for Millenium Actress is so unique, beautiful, and inspired. It’s this combination of his singing which is what I would poorly describe as gorgeous yodeling teetering into operatic howls which he digitally manipulates, pitch shifts, layers, and samples, over these electronic dance tracks which then veer into reverb-y orchestral plucking and religious choir chanting. It’s very emotional & atmospheric and I am doing a horrible job describing it so I will just make one of the songs my next recommendation and hopefully it can be hyperlinked. The final thing I’ll say about this movie is that I showed it to a friend a few years ago and he said that “this is not a feminist film and I’d say it would actually pass a reverse bechdel test whatever that is” and I completely agree. But sometimes it’s really beautiful when a woman has no other meaning in life than to find her crush! 😍

🎶 “Run” by Susumu Hirasawa from the Millenium Actress OST

This is my favorite song on the soundtrack but there’s a lot of good stuff on there. Another highlight is Chiyoko’s theme. I am also putting recs inside recs and have to recommend if you like this OST you have to check out Susumu Hirasawa’s album “Technique of Relief” which is the English translation of the title. You should actually just listen to all of his music. He was also in this amazing synth rock band in the late 70s/early 80s called P-Model. I should have just recommended Susumu Hirasawa in general but I am going to just let this all stay.

🎮 KUNITSU GAMI: PATH OF THE GODDESS

If you were a fan of the Onimusha, Okami, Otogi, or Ninja Gaiden games, I highly recommend Kunitsu Gami! I’m playing it on PS5, but it’s also available on PS4, XBox, PC, and Steam. It’s impossible to explain and yet here I go!!! Basically… it’s a strategy-based, hack and slash action/horror game where you take control of Soh, a genderless katana wielding dancing bodyguard to a magical goddess named Yoshiro who is tasked with ridding the mountain villages of “defilement” which is basically, as you may have inferred, demonic overgrowth entrapping and possessing all of the plants, animals, and villagers of the mountain. Your job is to clear a path for the Goddess through each village, and rescue villagers who you can then employ as soldiers of different classes and abilities. Day time is spent gathering resources, racing against the clock to stock up on health and set trap before sunset, which is when the portals to the demonic realm open and all kinds of ghouls & monsters start to crawl out. You then must survive the night by killing all the demons that emerge while making sure they don’t reach Yoshiro. It seems complicated at first but it is pretty simple once you play through the first two levels. This game is so fucking weird in the best way. It really feels like the heyday of Capcom making very specific games with weird-ass, eccentric character and creature design, a la Onimusha, Okami., and Viewtiful Joe. The art direction of this game is wild. In this making-of video on youtube, the creators said they wanted the players to feel like they’re moving through a diorama. To accomplish that, instead of digitally creating the environments, they had sculptors build full miniature villages, forests, traps, and effects BY HAND and then 3D scanned all the handmade miniatures and models into the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This makes me want to kill someone in a positive way. Art is not dead! So much love went into it and you can tell. This is that BTS video if you want to watch it

🛕 Halva

One of the things I love most in the world, that I’ve loved since I was a little boy, is that every Christmas I always get some halva. It's a Middle Eastern confection made from ground up sesame seeds and egg albumen into this heavenly candy. To this day, every Christmas, one of my kids gives me a chunk of halva, but I don't keep it in my house because I would just eat it all. I keep it in Sofia's house, and every once in a while I go and I take a little piece. 

🎬 The Thief of Baghdad

A very favorite movie that I always loved and saw my own life in because it related to certain stories of my own family is The Thief of Baghdad starring Sabu, Conrad Veidt, and John Justin. The Thief of Baghdad, played by Sabu, is a boy traveling around with this older caliph who is a handsome friend, and they go on an extensive journey together. Their dynamic always made me think of me and my older brother – it's a fantasy beyond fantasies, that movie. I love it so much. 

📖 Charlie Kaufman’s book, Antkind

I never knew Charlie Kaufman had written a book until I found “Antkind” after searching for “solipsist making a movie of his own life” on Google. I figured, well, this book is going to explain my life to me, so I read the whole thing, and it was very funny. It's long, but people who read it really enjoy it. It has this man, this writer, who has a unique mind and after reading this book, my perception of my own life felt completely different than it used to. My life felt like a fantasy being written by Charlie Kaufman – so that was my experience with “Antkind.” 

🛝 Playing with children

The most fun thing to do is to play with kids, be with a group of kids and just play with them and make up plays or stories. When I was younger I used to be a drama counselor: and I was in charge of about 9 boys, and I would always have so much fun with them, reading to them and doing treasure hunts.

🌺🧦 Hawaiian shirts & mismatched socks

20 years ago, I decided I wanted to have some of those Hawaiian shirts, but you couldn't buy them anymore. So I had a dozen Hawaiian shirts made by someone I knew who was a costume designer, and I used to wear them wherever I went. Over time, I would go to Brazil, for example, people would say, oh, he's wearing a Coppola shirt. People started calling them “Coppola shirts,” and they started to get popular again. As they got more popular, companies started to make them available to buy again. 

Then, I started wearing dissimilar socks to see if that would become a trend too – I think they do sell socks in mixed pairs now. It turns out that there's a boys' school in England where the tradition is to wear the wrong socks; there was also a famous physicist who wore mixed socks. So I'm not the only one.

Nilüfer Yanya is a London-based singer and songwriter. Since beginning her career posting demos on Soundcloud, she’s opened for artists like Adele and Mitski and released a few knock-out albums. Her music genre surfs from indie rock, to RnB, to trip-hop; she’s crafted a cool and mercurial sound (I’ve been especially digging this track.) 🪦 walks in the cemetery

I’ve been going for morning walks when possible in this overgrown cemetery close to me. It’s very peaceful and I can hear birds chirping.. It feels like a very necessary city detox. If I’m feeling stressed or anxious being amongst all the gravestones helps put things in perspective!

💤 rest is resistance

I came across the Nap Ministry via a podcast. I really believe in their ethos of “ rest as a form of resistance because it disrupts and pushes back against capitalism and white supremacy.” It’s recontextualising rest for me slowly. Another quote that sums it up perfectly - “ how will you be useless to capitalism today?” - Brontë Velez . really makes me think about how I want to live my life.

📖 I Who Have Never Known Men - Jacqueline Harpmen

The concept and the storyline makes it a really great book in my opinion. It’s post apocalyptic but anti survival. The main protagonist has no memory of before the disaster so is completely unattached to the idea of the world so has to create her own in an almost barren landscape. Poses some really interesting questions on existence.

📍 Acupuncture

My sister is training to be an acupuncturist so I’ve been learning  about it. I don’t think I took it seriously before but I’m changing my mind  (it’s over 2000 years old!) . It also has a really interesting recent  history in the US  with rehabilitation and addicts. Theres a documentary called. “Dope Is Death” which explains it really well.  If you’re interested but its too £$ try looking for students that are running open or practice clinics in your area.

✍️ Doodling

Compulsive doodler? In certain situations, I totally am one! In fact, all is  better with one’s preferred writing tool and paper, for countless reasons. Expressive  writing, lists, more lists, love notes, post-it notes, letters, lyrics, on and on. No matter how  small my bag is, I feel more complete with a pen and paper.

I’m a serial monogamist when it comes to t-shirts. Whichever one  has made it out of hiding, it tends to be ’the one’ for seemingly ages until, for whatever  reason, it changes. One of my favorite independent vintage shops in NYC! Lead by Olivia, this is a no fuss vintage shop that’s always got amazing hidden gems at decent prices. Olivia has great taste! My fave pony hair Miu Miu handbag is an Olivia find. A must visit if you’re near the East Broadway Mall!

💄 Armani Luminous Silk collection

I don’t like wearing makeup, in fact even at work where I’m required to wear makeup for camera I do my best to convince them not to put it on me! So when I tried the Armani Luminous Silk collection I was pleasantly surprised! They have a color match for me, which is tough as a mixed baby, and the coverage is sheer and light but buildable and it never looks or feels cakey! My face feels as naked as I wish I was :) love

🧘🏽 meditating

I started reading this book called Seeking The Heart of Wisdom which is about meditation and how to bring meditating into your every day life. It’s really helped me calm tf down! Every morning I take a few minutes just think set my intentions for the day, or goals for the week or month or even the year! Helps me stay grounded. highly recommend!!

Love LOVE this app. I love food- good food. And I’ve got my spots in NY but when I’m traveling, this app is a god sent to help me find new restaurants to try! Absolutely saved me when I was working and living in LA for the first time this summer.

This is the start of a new column where we’ll be getting some legends to do what we’re calling a “long form recommendation” on someone else’s work.

This isn’t a review (there are already enough bozo critics assigning # scores on art…) but it’s something a bit different and more in the spirit of what we do with Perfectly Imperfect - sharing what people love.

Lance Bangs is a filmmaker, documentarian, and music video director that’s worked with PI favorites such as Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Neutral Milk Hotel, Guided by Voices, Pavement, Green Day, Bjork, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, George Harrison, and Kanye West. That’s quite the resume in itself, but Lance was also heavily involved in one of the most iconic pieces of art from our time, MTV’s Jackass, and directed comedy specials for David Cross, Fred Armisen, Todd Barry, and many more. I could go on and on about his key role in various eras of comedy and indie rock. Lucky for us, Lance is here to talk about one of my favorite albums of the year.

Lance Bangs Talks MJ Lenderman’s Manning Fireworks

While it was warm in 2008, I traveled the United States with a crew of friends directing promotional videos for Rock Band 2, a rhythm and timing-based video game that came with guitars, drum kits and vocal mics. We traveled with modified Xboxes and prototypes of the instruments.

The appeal of these sorts of campaigns was that we could dash across the United States, conjuring surreal adventures. Swimming in the Ozarks with catfish grabblers. Hanging of murdered out choppers from Sturgis to the Devil’s Tower. Squishing our way through red clay of a riverside land trust that members of the Elephant 6 Collective had moved into outside of Athens, Georgia.

Johnny Knoxville had a batch of ideas to shoot back home in Tennessee, so we drove deep into the profoundly corrupt Cocke County, Tennessee. We crept past cement infrastructure inexplicably built in the undeveloped woods. Highway exit ramps that weren’t connected to any highways. Contractors being paid to build sections of bridges over no actual gap. Money being siphoned and kicked back as we tried to find Parrotsville, TN.

We spent the day with one of the last surviving moonshiners, Popcorn Sutton. Popcorn was facing charges after an undercover ATF agent from the Bush/Cheney administration had stitched him up on federal charges for illegally distilling spirits. When the year got colder, Popcorn chose to breathe the carbon monoxide of his green Ford Fairmont rather than going back to federal prison.

In each of these settings we would tell stories, make pictures, record conversations, and eventually play the Rock Band 2 video game that was funding all of this. It was, of course, stupid. 

What would music mean to the kids that were tapping glossy buttons on plastic headstocks of Guitar Hero and Rock Band 2? Would they feel more connected than people who had listened over radio, loudspeakers at the pool, or bands performing live? Would they have foundational nostalgia for the playlist of “Teenage Riot,” “Alex Chilton,” and “Drain You?”

Would a 7-year-old in Asheville, North Carolina play Guitar Hero, and then start learning actual riffs on real guitars with his friend? Would Jake and his three sisters get Rock Band 2 when it came out at the end of 2008? Weirdly, yeah. 

“Manning Fireworks” has the feel of Lenderman’s ongoing ease. It’s not an anxious record. He wrote a batch of engaging songs and produced the sessions along with Alex Farrar. Lenderman usually began with a scratch guitar and vocal take, then would play drums to that, then redo his guitars and vocals and play electric bass as well. A few tracks feature fiddle, upright bass, or trombone from Landon George, and Xandy Chelmis plays pedal steel. Karly Hartzman adds vocals to six of the nine songs, most notably on “She’s Leaving You” at the end of the album’s first side. Ethan Baechtold (another bandmate in Wednesday) plays piano on “Rip Torn.” 

“Joker Lips” cold-bloodedly declares:

Kahlua shooter
DUI scooter
With a rolling start on the hill ‘cause
This morning's tryna kill me
This morning wants to kill me

And through that song, the tone of the album is clarified- a sort of direct combination of Lenderman’s solid, comfortable ability to play melodically in a matter of fact way immune to doubt or second guessing, but not cocky.  

The album is unusual in that it works as a breezy, not strained, often effortless-feeling listen. It has lyrics that feel observational and pared down in the way that Will Oldham and David Berman and Bill Callahan were all capable of in their own ways. Insight and truisms, but with humor behind them. What we are mostly hearing is Lenderman playing along to himself (guitars, vocals, bass, and drums all being him the majority of the time) but it feels alive and not cloistered or fussy.  

Lenderman unspools amiable, sometimes shaggy, sometimes insistent guitar melodies across the album. “Rudolph” was written back in 2022, the first of this litter of songs. This recording came out as a 2023 single, and a 6 minute long live version appeared on the 2023 MJ Lenderman And the Wind (Live and Loose!) album.

“She’s Leaving You” jumps out as an instant exemplar of what Lenderman is admired for, a classic song that feels like you have had it in your life for longer than it has actually existed.

I get the most out of “Wristwatch,” with its descending riffs giving way to Xandy’s pedal steel on top of the guitar lead. The lyrics open with “So you say I’ve got a funny face/It makes me money” which conjures up a character misquoting Quiet Riot’s 1983 cover of Slade’s “Cum on Feel the Noize.” Lenderman excels at characters that come across as guys not getting it right, low-key committed to not quite understanding. A denseness, a hapless but easily seen wrongheadedness. Doubling down on not wising up.

The album builds up to the 9th song, a ten minute on-the-dot song that slides from personal lyrics into drone. The songs convey a shift, a breakup, the diverging of two people. Karly Hartzman doubles Jake’s vocals, and the song (and album) end with Jake explicitly concluding

Playing 'Bark at The Moon’

Bark at the moon

Another 1983 song, from 16 years before Jake would be born. “Bark at the Moon” was the final song in the career mode of the original Guitar Hero, the one that would require a kid to keep practicing, to keep playing along, to keep trying to get to the end.

🥖 Galco’s old world grocery

This place feels frozen in time in a charming way with a tinge of liminal space aesthetic. The nostalgic candies and toys make it feel familiar to me but only because I remember the stories from my mom and grandma's childhoods. This place carries a ton of specialty drinks and even offers an option of crafting your own soda with tons of syrup flavors to choose from. I'm still working on my perfect soda flavor combination. I'm recommending Galco’s not just for the vibe but for their sandwiches! Being from the east coast (new jersey, philly, new york) ive become a lowkey (hoagie) sandwich snob. The bread is my first priority and the bread here is the perfect texture. I really enjoy the Turkey Blockbuster without mustard and a bag of salt and vinegar chips.

📺 Cozy background tv shows

I wonder if there's a word for that feeling of warmth and peace that comes over you when you put on a show that effortlessly grabs and releases your attention. always resolving and ending and beginning again. The cycle and pattern of it all is satisfying to me. It feels too mundane to highlight but these are a few of my constants that im grateful for: - murder she wrote - columbo - kitchen nightmares

🪨 “i love you darlin’ like sisyphus loves the stone”

This cover of stone by deadwood floats is an audio hug to me. I've returned to this video at some of my sweetest and lowest times of my life since I found it back in high school. I love when songs follow you throughout your life like the moon follows you home. I love that music is made just because you want to make it and I'm grateful numbers don’t dictate all impact. This song/rendition is truly a gem and I still feel lucky I found it.

💾 Akai Mpc One

Akai is the home of many stand alone music production centers. My favorite is the mpc one. This decision holds sentimental value to me but I also love this machine because it doesn't need to be attached to a computer though It has to be plugged into an energy source. I don't mind because it's similar to when the internet was locked away in the family room. It encourages  intentional time even if it leads to nowhere. If making beats is not your thing, I do hope everyone has their own version of what the mpc means to me. Don't leave your inner child behind as you grow

🌱 house plants :)

House plants are more than decor. The life that they bring to a home is worth the upkeep.  If you're out of town often,  ask a neighbor/friend to take care of it. it takes a village most times and the love you put in comes back to you i promise. Even if it's something small, make sure you have a plant in your space.

♟️ Rummikub !

This game holds a special place in my heart and I love to play it with family and friends. 10/10 would recommend. (Target has a special version where there are more jokers and they can do cool things within the game!) very fun

📚 The body keeps the score

Even if you never make it past the cover of this book by Bessel Van der Kolk, there is healing in the title. it's a great reminder to listen to your body. Our bodies remember even when our brains forget. Take it easy when you can. cook a meal for yourself, go all out with the plating too. be detailed. pay attention. Breathe

🍽️ Bowery Bungalow, Los Angeles 

This is a little hidey hole restaurant in LA I absolutely love and I’m not sure if it gets enough hype.  Too many places in La feel like high school when you walk in and this one doesn’t at all! Cozy good vibes. Whilst writing this I just realized they are on Uber eats and now I’m ordering the tahini toast - it’s is to die for!!

🎨🖌️ Watercolor pen and sketch set

This watercolor paint set I just discovered, and probably people already know about but im so happy to not have to deal with paintbrushes, you just fill the pen with water! Genius. So now I can doodle anywhere. I had an accident and spilt coffee on the paint the other day so that's why it looks a little crazy. I try to hang little paintings my friends do or do a painting of where I am and if they are half decent frame them to put around the house. I’m in no way any good but it’s my favourite thing to do when I’m on a stressful phone call. 

❤️ Daughters, a documentary

Oh my god. The most beautifully made and moving documentary. My friend and I bawled our eyes out watching it this weekend. It follows incarcerated men who have little or no connection with their daughters prepare for a ‘date with dad’. I didn’t know so many prisons in the states do not allow contact visits. Angela who runs the program is a saint. To have an event that they could connect at where the Dads could put a suit and tie on, the girls could dress up and enjoy their dads... how deeply it impacted them all, is heartbreaking to watch. It reminds you of the strength and importance of familial bonds and also the power of story. A new narrative in these relationships was the beginning of huge seismic shifts and future outcomes. It’s a must watch!

My producer Jules and I both got this microphone and I feel like I’m going to base the next record all around it. Nothing like an amazing vintage microphone!

🧴💆‍♀️ iS clinical vitamin c serum

I have way too many skin products and sometimes am so lazy, I don’t follow any routine religiously but this is the one product that’s stuck around that I always come back to. The vitamin C in the day and the blue bottle pro heal at night. If I keep that up I notice such a difference in my skin texture. Now I need to get committed again. 

💊 Lypo-Spherics 

These vitamin sachets are the holy grail. I heard Robert Downey Jr takes them? They taste like cat shit so drink them with juice or coconut water but MY GOD it’s worth it. Saved me from getting sick or sped up recovery every single time... they truly have superpowers. 

📘Moon Lists 

I found Moon lists on Substack and got the workbook journal and I love doing these little check ins. There’s a bunch of exercises and I find the questions so thoughtful. I just re read one of the sensory exercises and I’ve written about a rainy day going to buy a lamp that I probably would have forgotten about, and a conversation with Amy from amyl and the sniffers in a toilet at a bar.

🌳 Owning a bonsai

When I was preggers in the last month and didn’t really feel like seeing anyone I got obsessed with getting a bonsai tree. I found a number on Google and pulled up to a house in East Hollywood and a lady had a bunch of them locked up in her back garden. Felt super cool and mysterious. Some of them she’d had for 30 years. Fell in love with this guy and have become obsessed with pruning- does he not look so fab?!!

⛱️ Pink pool shade and umbrella

Got rid of all of my ugly outdoor furniture recently and updated it with some fab new stuff from business of pleasure. Completely addicted now and matching towels with a float are on the way. With this poolside cohesion my days are just sweeter! 

😃 Joan and Jericho podcast

Ok so this a podcast by the fabulous actresses Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine where they receive fictional relationship questions and respond to them in a BBC women’s hour tone. They sound like British mum’s having tea, so the content is all the more shocking. It’s the filthiest most ridiculous thing to ever exist 😂

🫶 Going to bed at 9am, bio oiling my entire body and having everything I want to read on the bed

This is currently my ideal night in. After Andy, Cookie Meuller’s collected stories by Olivia Laing, the Whitney review I got to read Alissa Bennet and Mary Gaitskill’s interview, Liz Phair’s memoir are what’s on the docket at the moment.

My mum got me onto Klask and now I’m obsessed. It’s like a mini air hockey, table tennis game that is apparently big in Danish pubs. Many a night on the KLASK!

🔥 Gilda

I watched Gilda on a plane because I had run out of movie options, and since watching sky maps (rawdogging) became a bro-tok thing, I decided to revert back to traditional in-flight entertainment. Gilda is incredibly modern for something made in the 40’s, features Rita Hayworth at the height of her beauty and has a nuanced script that avoids characters lumbering you with dry exposition. All of the history between characters is implied. It is a joy to watch.

👞 One shoe on one shoe off

Since I was a child I have enjoyed walking around my house with one shoe on and, you guessed it, one shoe off. Something about the cold floor under one foot and something comfy on the other offers a duality that’s hard to beat. I’m aware this is weird. Please don’t tell anyone. 

🦶 Charvet Slippers

I gave a friend of mine a pair of silver Charvet slippers at her baby shower so that she would have something nice and sort of glamorous to wear once the baby was born. I went on a celebrity foot site to gauge her shoe size from the creeps that collate that type of info. Miu miu recently made a similar pair of the Charvet classics in black leather. I love that they smack of rich old grandpa and like to wear mine with socks in winter and in the summer au naturale as they make a great vacation shoe.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option. I know it seems I’m obsessed with slippers but the Cammie Woman’s slipper is cheap and cool.

🌺 La Roche posay B5 cream cicaplast

My go to moisturiser. I slather this on my face when I’ve run out of more expensive creams. I’m not one for multi step routines, the most jazzy I get is to add face oil to it.

⚱️ Sir John Soane’s Museum

Sir John Soane’s Museum in London is a beautiful Georgian home that has been kept exactly as it was when he lived there. Expect hidden secret paintings behind little doors, stunning statues and inspiring paint colours from ye olde times.
